Crystal Rig Wind Farm is located on the Lammermuir Hills approximately 40 km east of Edinburgh and 10 km south of Dunbar in the Scottish Borders, adjacent to the boundary with East Lothian.
When Crystal Rig Wind Farm commenced operation in October 2003 it was the largest onshore wind farm in Scotland with a rated output of 50MW consisting of 20 Nordex 2.5 MW N80 turbines The hub heights of the Phase I turbines are 60m with a rotor diameter of 80m.
In phase 2 a further five Nordex turbines were added bringing the total generating capacity to 62.5MW from May 2007.
The turbines are serviced and maintained by Nordex UK from their local service centre.
As well as maintaining and managing the turbines for safety and energy production, the on-site team are responsible for monitoring the local ecology such as water tables, stream water quality and maintaining the natural plant and animal life around the wind farm.
Whilst we build and operate wind farms we also focus on reducing the impact on local communities and the area’s ecology. There is a Community Benefit Fund as part of the ongoing commitments to communities in the vicinity of the wind farms. The purpose of the fund is to enable communities to carry out improvements to their local area in ways which benefit the local environment, local amenities or tourism. Each year the wind farm allocates an amount of money to the community council, which administers its disbursement to the community.
Consideration will be given to all types of project which benefit the local community and permission to proceed will be granted for ideas which successfully fulfil the aims of the scheme. Applications will be dealt with on receipt of the application form that is available from your local Community Council.
