United Kingdom development projects

Fred. Olsen Renewables is one of the leading independent renewable energy producers in the UK

We have been developing and operating wind farms since the mid-1990s. Our operational wind farm portfolio in the UK comprises a total generating capacity of 529.7 MW and we have an extensive pipeline of wind energy projects coming forward.

With over twenty-five years of experience in consenting, developing and operating wind farms, we are one of very few developers that take a project all the way from initiation and development, through to operation and ultimately decommissioning. To date, we have a 100% track record of success – supporting every project that we have identified into consent and/or operation.

By being involved in every aspect of a wind farm’s lifecycle, we are not only experts in developing successful projects, we are good neighbours. Engagement with key stakeholders and the local communities surrounding our sites is at the heart of all we do.

We are using our experience to explore emerging technologies and offshore wind development. This will allow us to bring forward a mix of renewable technology developments – delivering environmental, economic and social benefits for many years to come.

Brockloch Rig I

In late 2017, Fred. Olsen Renewables purchased two wind farms (Polwhat Rig and Gallow Rig) from Windy Standard Limited. These wind farms became fully operational in November 1996 and consist of 36 Nordtank wind turbines each of 600 kilowatts (kW), providing a maximum power of 21.6 megawatts (MW). The wind farm is located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.

We are exploring opportunities to replace the existing Windy Standard I turbines with new, larger, modern turbines that utilise the latest technology. This project is called Windy Standard I Repower.

Windy Standard III

Brockloch Rig III Ltd. received in March 2021 approval from Scottish Ministers to construct and operation Windy Standard III. The 20-turbine project is an extension to Windy Standard I and Windy Standard II. These three projects combined will deliver enough electricity to power the equivalent of 131,285 homes annually and deliver over £15m in a community benefit fund.

We look forward to working closely with local residents to make sure that the social and economic benefits of the project are realised, and maximised, locally.

Crystal Rig IV

Fred. Olsen Renewables operates Crystal Rig Wind Farm. The project is located approximately 11km south of Dunbar in East Lothian and 16.5km north-west of Duns, within the Scottish Borders.

Please visit www.crystalrigwindfarm.co.uk for the latest updates on Crystal Rig IV.

Crystal Rig Wind Farm first commenced operation in 2003 and we were granted consent for an 11-turbine extension in 2021. This involves:

  • Four turbines at up to 149.9 m tip height.
  • Three turbines at up to 174.5 m tip height.
  • Four turbines at up to 200 m tip height.

When Crystal Rig Wind Farm began operating it consisted of 25 turbines. A further 60 turbines were added in 2010 and a further six in 2015.

The recently consented extension, Crystal Rig IV, will form a natural expansion of the existing site and will involve the construction of 11 turbines up to 200m to tip. This will allow the wind farm, combined, to generate 262.5MW of electricity – the equivalent to powering more than 200,000 homes annually.
